About

Upon Religion is a site offering religious commentary and works by J.H. McKenna, Senior Lecturer, History of Religious Ideas, University of CA Irvine.

Dr. McKenna has taught religious studies and the history of religious ideas at several universities since 1992 and since 1999 at the University of California Irvine in Southern California.

Though conversant in Eastern religions, his main interest is Western religious thought as it confronts and adjusts to particular challenges of modern life.

One such challenge, conspicuous since the 1800s, is religious skepticism, which provoked numerous theological adjustments in religious thinkers.

Dr. McKenna often views religious ideas through the lens of benign humor.

  1. Good afternoon J.H. McKenna,
My name is Jessica Garza and I am the Expert Outreach Manager with Deily.org. Deily is a site where you can find all of the world’s religious information, and the organizations dedicated to the understanding of it in one place. We want to help our members find answers to their questions of faith and spirituality. Deily’s mission. We are here to connect, share, learn and grow.

I recently had the good fortune of reading your article on “Huffington Post” regarding religion in politics. I want to tell you how much I appreciated your clearly written and thought provoking article. While some much been written on this topic, your article expresses that political view determines the choice of religious text and also the interpretation.

On Deily there is a similar piece of content that relates to your article. In this piece of content they discuss which presidential candidate would God support based on your knowledge of the Bible. I was hoping you could take the time to look at the article https://www.deily.org/discussion/a-question-for-all-my-friends-at-deily-about-politics-religion on Deily and explore the website and all it has to offer. Such as discussions, blogs, prayers, readings and lectures.

I hope we can schedule a time to speak by phone, at your convenience, of course. I look forward to your reply.
    Thank you in advance.

    • Jessica, You are right to see that the bible has passages that could support either the right or the left of the political spectrum. I would therefore hesitate to say the bible recommends ONE American political party. It’s my view that ‘the tail wags the dog’ on this matter: it’s not that the bible recommends a politics and THEN people follow that path; it’s rather that people make their political choice and then search out the bible passages that confirm the choice: politics determine biblical interpretation and the choice of ‘proof texts.’ Thanks for the note! – Joe

  2. I don’t know if my comment in HuffPost today got to you. I could not find it listed. So here it is, again…more or less.

I appreciated your article on “Revelation.” For years, I have wondered just why religionists and people, in general, are so focused upon physical evolution. I want to shout, “Move on! Get over it, already, and engage in the possibilities of the implications of evolution for growth in consciousness!” :-) To me, the essence of the concept of physical/biological evolution is the possibility of consciousness evolution – “consciously evolving consciousness.” It is only in the evolution of consciousness into higher dimensions of mind that new revelations will come, revelations of “dimensions” that have always been there, to which we – humanity – have always responded, but unfortunately for us, in an imbalanced manner.
